So You Want to Start…Working Out in the Morning

Over the years I’ve grown to love exercising in the morning. It frees up my evenings, leaves me fewer excuses for skipping out on a workout, and helps me feel more alert throughout the day. Research shows morning workouts can also improve sleep, acuity, and productivity, as well as positively impact diet and exercise habits.

However, just because I love morning workouts doesn’t mean I leap out of bed at the sound of my alarm, eager to exercise every day. Even us morning people might find it tough to head out for a run before the sun rises or attend a 6AM burpee bootcamp. I’ve skipped my fair share of early workouts, but I’ve also gotten quite good at not skipping them too, thanks to a little strategic planning, preparation and positive thinking.

If you’re wanting to become more of a morning exerciser, here are some of my top tips. Maybe they’ll help you too!

1. Ease into it. If you’ve never exercised in the morning before, don’t sign up for 6AM personal training sessions five days in a row. To start, schedule one morning workout per week. Try choosing a day you have something fun planned for that night. Knowing you can’t put your workout off might give you more incentive to get out of bed and exercise that morning. When you start to feel okay with one day per week, bump it up to 2. Gradually your body (and brain) will get used to sweating before 7 o’clock.

2. Write a workout schedule for the week. This is helpful no matter what time of day you prefer to exercise, but building your day around a morning workout really does give you fewer excuses to skip it. Besides a horrible night’s sleep, there are few things that can get in the way of you and your morning workout. When writing your workout schedule, also consider things like work deadlines, events and travel plans, so you can let your really busy days be rest days!

3. Enlist a morning workout buddy. It’s a lot harder to skip a morning sweat session if you have someone counting on you to show up. No one wants to be that person who bails!

4. Before you go to bed, decide exactly what morning workout you will do. For example, instead of saying, “I will exercise before work tomorrow,” say “I will jog 2 miles and do 30 pushups before work tomorrow.” Workout agendas maximize efficiency by eliminating wasted minutes spent debating which piece of cardio equipment to hop on or which strength move to do next. This allows you to budget just the right amount of time you’ll need to fit in your workout. It also prevents you from dozing back off to sleep while pondering what type of exercise you’ll do.

5. Lay out your exercise clothes the night before. This gesture alone is a sign you’re committed to getting out of bed for exercise in the morning. It takes the guesswork out of dressing for the weather, which can be overly complicated if you’re groggy from a good night’s sleep. Check what the low temperature will be overnight and plan your workout attire accordingly. If your workout is fairly early, chances are the temperature will be at or near the low temperature for the night. Your still-sleeping significant other will appreciate not hearing you fumble around in the dark as you look for your favorite pair of socks.

6. Pack your gym bag before you go to bed if you plan on showering elsewhere. You’re much less likely to forget critical belongings like deodorant and underwear. I’ve done both and it doesn’t make for a great start to the day. Take it one step further and write down a list of essential items such as shampoo & conditioner, towel, deodorant etc… and take a quick peek at it as you’re packing. Eventually, you’ll have it memorized!

7. Get a good night’s sleep. Like I mentioned above, there are few things that can get in the way of you and your morning workout, but sleep deprivation is one of them. It’ll get the best of you almost every time.

8. Think positive thoughts. When your alarm goes off, don’t dwell on how much you’d rather fall back asleep or how tired you are. Instead, focus on what you’re excited to do with your free time after school or work, or how great you’ll feel the rest of the day for sticking to your goal. Remember, the only workouts you regret are the ones you don’t do!

Working out in the morning isn’t for everyone, but if you want to start then it’s entirely possible to make it a healthy habit with enough planning, preparation and positive thinking. I’m proof—and I hope these little tricks will help you too!

Do you prefer morning, afternoon or evening workouts? What helps you early exercisers get out of bed in the morning?

Working out in the morning gives my energy for my challenging days. Highly recommended!

  • Suzabell

I downloaded a new alarm clock app on my phone that requires me to be within a certain distance from my wifi to be able to “dismiss”! Once I am up the dogs take care of allowing me to go back to bed! 😉

    • amyschicos

      What app is that Suzabell?

      • Suzabell

        Goob Alarm Clock
“GOOB” = Get Out Of Bed!
I found it in Play Store for Android.

        • Sun_n_moon

This sounds fabulous & just what I need!! Thanks for sharing!

    • katerrrr

That sounds neat! I’ve used one too that makes you solve math problems to dismiss it. You can make them easy or very difficult so that it’s impossible to turn off if you’re still half asleep.

  • Julie

No matter how much I’ve tried its like my body won’t even think about functioning before 7a.m. I’ve tried everything, I can’t make myself get up and I wanna workout in the morning so bad, it would fit my schedule perfectly!!

    • danxmanly

Start out with a small achievable goal… like workout in the morning just one day a week.. and start with a small workout. Maybe it’s just a simple walk around the block. Once you get comfortable doing that.. add an extra loop to your walk.. or even a few weights… then eventually the gym will come natural as will a few extra days of a.m. workouts. Get into a group class so you’re held accountable. Nothing worse than catching the wrath of your workout buddies when you decide to sleep in. 😉 Good luck.

      • Monique Sporri

I started with a 5 minute walk. Not for ‘exercise’ but to form the HABIT of getting up and out. I didn’t even bother with workout clothes, just dragged whatever was handy on, and slip on shoes and went. I figured I could commit to 5 mins a day, it was quick so no one would ‘see me,’ and if I got a bit wet? well? what was a 5 min shower? When 5 mins was ‘easy’ (took a few weeks) I went to 7 mins. Then 10 and 15, etc. It worked for me.

        • Maggie Guerra

That’s a really good idea. I’m a couch potato trying to ease into things and this sounds right up my alley!

        • Marie Bonniec

I like the way you wrote your post. Makes me feel I can do the same thing. Normally I hate early morning exercise.

        • Patsy

I did the exact same thing. Started out in FLIP FLOPS! Now I am up to 1 mile per day in walking shoes. I started doing it for my blood pressure, but I lost 10 lbs along the way! I actually now look forward to my morning walk everyday!

        • Cyndy

Great suggestion. Sounds so workable. Thanks

        • natty

Thanks alot! That’s a strategy that would work really well for me!

        • sandra

Sounds like a great idea, I currently walk at night but find I easily find excuses if I’ve had a busy day at work or have stuff to do at home. The thought of getting up earlier does not thrill me at all but if I take your advice and tell myself it’s only for 5 mins then it’s worth a shot – thank you

    • OT2014

If you want to run, download the Couch to 5k App (C25K) It gives you reminders and rewards, such as coupons. I have asthma, and tendinitis in my knees and have never ran more than about 5-10 mins. (RARELY a mile without stopping) I bought a new pair of Brooks running shoes and signed up for the Color Me Rad 5k with my roommate. I’m happy to say that with a workout buddy and this app I successfully ran the 5k and ran, mornings and evenings! Hopefully it helps you!

      • Shan AB

Hey OT2014 – I read your post and found it interesting, as I have asthma too. It makes running a bit of a pain! I generally run a good 8k, but I have to take my Ventolin just before I go running, and take the Seretide both morning and night. What do you generally do? I also hear that swimming is great to help with asthma – it may help with your running. I wish you all the best. 🙂

        • jj

Also have asthma, and the morning/night inhaler + one before exercise is helpful for me, but on some days it’s worse regardless of intensity. I think swimming would only help because you might be improving your lung capacity; my doctor said that humidity makes the air feel heavy and uncomfortable for a lot of people with asthma (me included). It’s maybe better if you can find a pool with less chemicals and a lower temp, but that kind of eliminates most gym settings :

Also about sleep – if you are unable to wake up at seven, you probably need more! Alarm clocks are pretty new to humanity. People used to get enough sleep to just wake up in the morning by themselves, and now it’s weird to imagine a world with no snooze. If you’re trying to wake up by 6am, you might need to go to bed by 9pm. If you’re not feeling rested when you wake up you’re also going to have sleep debt, keeping you tired even if you would be fine with 8 hours otherwise. I frequently lose my alarm clock battles, but sometimes I can figure out where I went wrong.

      • Lisa Burns

I have adult onset asthma. Would love to start running again! I recently found an all natural supplement called “Asthma Clear” at the health food store and it has helped me tremendously especially in the mornings. I use my ventolin a lot less. You take 2 capsules 3 times a day to start. I took them like this for one week. Now I take 1 , 3 times a day just to maintain. If I remember correctly it is by a company called Ridgecrest. Might be worth you looking into this! Not very expensive, either.

    • Felicia Streeter

      Try going to bed earlier.

      • epickett

Easier said than done, though. That’s currently what’s holding ME back – I like to stay up too late. 🙁

        • Jorey Segal Beamesderfer

It’s the same with going to sleep earlier. Ease into it by going to bed 15 min earlier for a few days. Then another 15 and repeat until you’re where you want to be.

        • Sonshine T

I, too, am a chronic night owl! One thing that helped me was to get some melatonine with theanine and take it between 30-60 minutes BEFORE I wanted to be sleepy. I was surprised how effective it was of having me wanting to go to bed at a decent hour! LOL! Worth a shot!

          • epickett

So were you having PROBLEMS falling asleep, or did you just WANT to stay up?

          • I personally have trouble falling asleep. I can’t tell you the amount of nights that I have spent laying in bed for hours upon hours wide awake.

          • Jackie

I switched working nights to days….as a nurse my body was a wreck. Now I use Melatonin sublingual melts to help me fall asleep. Works!! I just started going to the gym 1 morning per week, 3 evenings….I hope to increase the morning gym days…..but would have to wake up at 4am….hmmmmm

          • SophiaV

Hi Jennifer, what is your routine before going to bed?

          • Jennifer

Ordinarily, my hubby and I tend to go to bed around 11-12. I brush my teeth, and sometimes do a bit of light reading. He watches TV before he falls asleep, but it is usually off long before I end up in bed. He falls asleep easier than I do. A lot of the time he doesn’t even make it to 11. I end up tossing and turning in my bed for several hours, before finally falling asleep.

          • SophiaV

Try to go for a brisk walk with your hubby in the evening which helps to remove stress chemicals from your bloodstream and prepare you for sleep. Doesn’t matter if you do this couple hours before going to bed.
Also, do you have tea or coffee in the evening? These are stimulants and you may want to re-think your dietary habits. If you have late dinner with carbohydrates, it can cause sleeping problems

    • Patsy

Start out slow and easy. Walk to the corner and back. Do that for 3-4 days. Then build up slowly. Enjoy the walk. Look around. Get a pedometer. It doesn’t take much time at all. You won’t feel sore. Ease into it. I cannot stress enough how you will begin to WANT to walk.

      • ldm

Snow and ice makes that hard to do. Can’t wait for spring to start walking outside. In the mean time I do what I can inside. I love your last sentence!

        • GH

I love walking in the snow! Get Yak Traks…they strap on your boots and you will not slip on ice at all! I recommend the ones for running…more heavy duty and last several winters

      • carla

        Great tip. Thanks!

      • Mary Smith Hansen

It’s true! I crave my walks!

    • Josh

Something that has helped me is just shining bright light in my face right when the alarm goes off and then giving myself a second to wake up before I actually physically get up. It sounds silly, but the bright light actually tells your body to stop producing the hormone associated with sleeping, melatonin. You can also buy a bright light alarm clock, but they’re kind of hard to find unless you’re looking online.

      • Billie

I have my light on a timer…5 mins before my alarm for this reason. 😉

        • bunski

          That’s a great idea! I think I will try that…

  • Bri

I used to work out in the mornings, every weekday I’d be up at 5:30am to get to the gym for an hour before work. I hated every second of it. I had a gym buddy, a packed bag, the whole nine yards, but the thought of getting up that early, even though I went to bed at a good hour, really made me hate the gym. I’d still be tired and cranky at work too. Right now I’m trying the evenings, since I have to work out twice a week in the evening with my trainer anyway. The perfect time for me is during lunch, but my local gym is so crowded then! There is a balance somewhere, and two years down the road, I’m still trying to find it.

    • Tatyana Karataneva

      Hi, Bri,
I would like to ask you how long is your lunch break, so you could afford a gym session and shower and preparing for work again, afterwards? I am really curious

      • Nomnomnivore

I tried working out on my hour lunch too, and it just wasn’t long enough for a real session and a shower. Maybe I have just not mastered the superfast shower aspect? I dunno.

        • christine

bowflex has this new fourteen minute machine. it really works ya good.i think its called MAX. for those that say, oh i dont have time morning or evening. yeah, an hour sounds horrible, but a fourteen minute workout on this thing. maybe you have time for that.

        • Mucca

Our gym has a 50 minute Yoga and Pilates class during the lunch hour. These courses take minimal clothing requirements (no shoes!) and minimal sweating. I don’t get the cardio work out just a good strengthening and stretching session. I also do not need to shower after the 50 minutes and this saves time.

          • Superdave

My only problem is my bad lower back….it takes quite a while to feel solid enough to workout. I feel much weaker in the morning than the afternoon, even after a hard days work. I would love to work out in the morning ,…..any thoughts.

          • Patch

Try a gym ball. Sitting on it for five minutes a day in front of the TV or computer and gradually increase increments by five minutes when you no longer find it difficult. The instability has you making tiny adjustments that strengthen the back and core muscles. You can actually buy a Base on wheels that turns a gym ball into am office chair as they are so good for combating back issues caused by long periods at the desk

      • Nic

I love my lunch time work outs, luckily my gym is in my office building but I also have an agreement with my boss that on gym days I come in half an hour early so that I can take 1.5 lunch break. That gives me 10 mins to get there and get changed, 45 min class, 10 min stretch and 25 mins to shower and get back to my desk! I know not all jobs are as flexible but it’s worth asking 🙂

        • target po 2015

          gud

      • Megan Snakebite Osberger

Sometimes I do lunch workouts. I know that any cardio over 30 min, and i HAVE to shower, so usually I do less than that. Sure, I’m a little sweaty, but I just use baby wipes to clean up and then head back to work. I wouldn’t do this if I had an important afternoon meeting, but normally, I don’t so it’s fine.

    • Karen Bures

Yep. I literally do both. I prefer an evening work out, but I have kids with homework, activities, etc. so it just doesn’t always fit. So now 2 days it’s a morning work out and 2-3 it’s in the evenings. And some weeks those days change but it’s worked for me.

    • Savannah833

I think everyone is different, and what time a day a person is optimally ready for exercise is different for everyone. I abhor working out after work; the idea of having to go to the gym in the evenings hangs over my head like a burden. I hate feeling like my day doesn’t truly end at the end of a workday. In the mornings however, I have the energy I don’t have at the end of a workday.

However, this is me–I have friends who truly struggle with their energy levels in the mornings and that’s okay. It’s just a matter of finding the time that works well for your body

      • Robyn

You are spot on, what works for one person is not always going to work for another. I personally love the mornings.

      • dan

Morning workouts are inexplicably amazing for your health and daily energy reserve. This is not only a healthy alternative, but what I found was that it keeps me productive throughout my day. It keeps me focused on my daily goals because I know that I’ll need to sleep by 10pm in order to rest plentiful. I Highly recommend to look for a partner or personal trainer to hold you accountable, vice-versa. I also use g-alarm from the Android Market, it makes you do mathematical problems and puzzles before you can hit the snooz, turn off, or set another alarm. Some may wake up to a cup of coffee or news on tv, but with the mindset of a warrior I sometimes wake up to 7 minute burpes! Best of all, it’s never the same workout because you can pre determine your workout schedule the night before.
Cardio, core, upper body, lower body-be dynamic.

    • Terri Provencher

Bri, Have you tried breaking up your workout? Maybe get a mile or two in the morning and do weight training at your gym either at lunch or in the evening with your trainer. I found that when I do not have enough time (an hour or so) I will skip my workout. So I decided to get a couple of miles in the morning which takes me 20 min.. then I will do my kettle bell workout or other weight training later in the day which is about 30 minutes. I hate getting up too early to work out but when I tell myself its only 20 minutes its a little easier. 🙂

  • Jill

I love working out before daylight hits. My husband and I get up anywhere from 5am-6am. I just don’t even allow myself to think about staying in my warm, comfy bed, I just get up and get ready. As soon as I hit the outside, I’m starting my day out feeling accomplished and giving my body what it craves – OXYGEN!!!

    • normanxxx

I agree with you. I find mornings to be very good because my energy level will be excellent. I wake up at 5am and go out for a run, and then do a bit of cross training.

  • Ashley

I am a night owl. If it can be done at night, I do it. So nights are perfect for me.

  • Elissa Malcohn

I typically work out at night and at home, but every so often I have to motivate myself for a morning session. I’m getting used to running again, so I spend the previous day planning my route, checking the weather, getting my clothes ready, etc. I also eat a solid, high-energy meal beforehand and prepare it as much as possible the night before. That way, all I have to do is heat it in the microwave and I’m good to go.

  • Terence Tan

I am force to workout in the morning to avoid massive jam to work, and most importantly, so that I could have time in the evening to relive my wife from taking care of our newborn.

  • Hugheslittlej

I have been a regular morning exerciser for some time now and do all of the above. It helps! However, not being a morning person I find it much easier and more pleasant to wake up to my ‘Wake up light’ alarm clock! It’s a gentler way to wake up during dark mornings, more natural introducing light and sound gradually and you are less likely to snooze. I feel much less cranky waking up this way. Happy sweating! 🙂

  • r1cksy

I love morning workouts and run 4 or 5 days a week – kick starts the day and feels great!

  • Jill Sweet

If I really could choose, I think I would choose afternoon workouts. However, I work full time so that is not an option. I have three young children, so mornings are what work best for me, and I have had more success with maintaining the routine because nothing else just ‘comes up’ at 5:00 a.m., unless it’s a sick child or something. I have come to enjoy working out in the morning; especially in the summer when I can watch the sun rise on my morning run! I feel better and have more energy all day as well!

  • Shayne

I work out 3 mornings a week and 3 afternoons a week after work . . I also have a gym at home so if I have the gym craving on a night off I can still work out. It’s great to have something else to do rather than just home and work. I also have a personal trainer 1 to 2 times a month to keep me on my toes and on schedule. It all about finding the right balance for you. Change your gym times around to suit your weeks. 🙂

  • D0ry

To all of you who said you CAN’T wake up early – please, give it a try, you never know!

I’ve never been a morning person. I’ve always been late for school and for work. I used to study until late hours and wake up late, etc. When I was a kid I used to train skiing – a whole day thing, so it’s never been about what time of the day I prefer, but it was hard to wake up even for skiing.

It’s almost two years now since I started being more serious about my health, by eating better and working out (and discovered MFP, by the way). In those two years I’ve tried EVERY single way of training – gym, pool, home videos, jogging, any of those after work, in the middle of the day during the weekends, even occasionally in the lunch break. Just recently I decided to give a chance to early morning work out with up to 30 minutes home dvds. God, thats the best thing out there. As you said – my evenings are free, it takes just a little earlier wake up and I take a morning shower anyway. I might have been a little sore in the beginning (nothing to do with the hour, right?), but my MOOD, energy and overall and enthusiasm during the day was greater than ever.

Sadly, it appeared that I am doing burpees and power jumps etc. at 6 AM over the head of my still sleeping neighbor downstairs so I had to stop 🙁

Now I’m back to working out after work and before doing anything else with friends and family – and it’s much harder to stick to this schedule.

Good luck everyone! The most important thing is that we DO work out! 🙂

  • MamaBear

Because of my schedule, I am at the gym at 3:30am; I have the place to myself so there is no hesitance in pushing myself and I’m back home to get everyone ready for the day by 5:30 and feeling great!

  • Beatrice Henry

thanks for the tips!! I’ve gotten really lazy with the morning workouts but this will help get me back into the swing of things!!

  • Noelie

Thanks for the tips! I so badly want to be a morning workout person. My mornings start at 6am as it is. Maybe I could get up at 5:30? Evening workouts just don’t happen at our house! I think it may be time to ditch the gym (which only works for weekends) and be a morning jogger/classic moves kind of exerciser.

  • Boredatwork

I struggle with getting up early to work-out but I have done it in the past, so I know I can do it again. My downfall is staying up too late – my New Year’s resolution was to go to bed earlier and get more (and better) sleep. Still working on it. I was actually just telling my husband that I need to stop watching TV shows that come on at 10pm. We DVR everything, I don’t HAVE to watch it when it is on. And stop staring at computer and phone screens past 10pm. Maybe even earlier, but I need to start somewhere!

    • Blivieri

I’m with you Bored. I’m more of a night person. I don’t work until 9am, and leave the house at 8:30am, so I can afford to stay up later than normal. But now, I like the thought of getting up early and being productive, workout or no workout. I too have tried the “bed by 10, sleep by 11” resolution. Has not worked well except when I was sick right after the new year. I guess I haven’t been trying too hard. I love my late night TV! (And I have no DVR.)
I eventually want to go to the gym in the mornings as the after work timeslot is soooo crowded. Perhaps if I do the early bedtime thing, and just get up make breakfast early for a week or two. The next week or two schedule a get up and walk week, then next a get up and hit the gym week. Perhaps if I write it down it will come true!

      • Topazhoney

You may want to reconsider getting a DVR, you won’t have to be concerned with missing a late night show.

  • Lisa

I love, love, love my morning workouts! I usually either run or cycle outside, and I love the feeling of getting out when the rest of the world is still sleeping…usually between 4-5AM. Sometimes, I have a few bunnies for company. And the energy I have the rest of the day is totally worth climbing out of that warm bed.

  • Andy

Working out in the morning is no bueno for me, I much prefer working out after work. Plus it gives me something to look forward to after the occasional drudgery at the office. 🙂

    • Savannah833

So interesting–for me, exercising at the end of the day feels like a burden that weighs on me throughout the day, lol. Quite the opposite from you, but I think every one is different in terms of when exercise is optimal for them. The mornings seem to work well for me, but for some of my friends, after work is their cup of tea. Different strokes and all…

    • Nakia

I feel this way too. working out at the end of the day helps me release any tension and stress that built up during the day and shake the (mental and physical) cubical blues. I’m also not a morning person so I don’t want to be rushed and I have my highest energy in the evenings.

  • Joe_d

I do my cardio 3 days a week early in the morning, and my strength workouts (kettlebells) on alternate days on 2 evenings and Saturday morning. The only real issue with my schedule is the Tues/Thurs evening kettlebells followed by the Wed/Fri 6 am cardio sessions (I do some HIIT and steady state cardio for a total of 60 minutes). With less than 12 hours of recovery, I usually have a protein bar to help fuel the cardio sessions the next mornings, otherwise I can feel pretty beat afterwards.

  • Khassidy

Working out in the morning has changed my life! I really hated working a nine hour day, THEN having to go home and workout. More often than not I just wouldn’t. That’s when I decided to start working out BEFORE work! (6am). It fits me perfectly! I can get a good work out, shower, and be on my way. The best part is, the endorphins put me in a great mood for the remainder of the morning!

    • Savannah833

You could be my twin, I feel just as you do. The mental health boost from the endorphins keep me so happy throughout the day, and better able to handle stress.

  • KimberlyO

I like to get a good workout at 5 am (DVD) and then I get in a brisk 15 minute walk at 10 am and at 2:30 pm. If I haven’t hit my target steps, I may do a walking DVD after work. I love the vibrating alarm on my Flex for the midday walks. I literally walk back and forth in a hallway outside our office – listening to audiobooks. I have a timer app on my phone that lets me know when my 15 minutes are up.

  • Mary

I am one of the early morning exercise people. And I LOVE it! I pretty much have done everything that is written above. But the best motivation for me is – the group of “exercise friends” that I made from the gym, that I hang out with. If I’m not there, I will hear about it. :-).

  • CarneAsadaBrito

My 5 month old prevents any of this from happening.

CarneAsadaBrito…I was in the same boat when my kids were infants. They are now 2 and 3 and it’s still not easy, because they aren’t old enough to be left sleeping in the house alone while I go out jogging for a morning workout. When I was a stay at home mom, I worked out in-home while they napped (instead of napping with them) and that gave me a solid hour. I did several different workouts that took minimal/no equipment. When I started back at work, I struggled with WHEN do I workout now since I pick them up right after work?? I found a gym that has a “jungle kids” program that watches kids while you get your workout in!! It’s cheap and my kids love it! It’s a win win for me!

in the early days I had a friend text me to get up and out. The first text came at 6:20am, and since I didn’t want to disappoint him I did it. I tried to adjust the time for daylight savings, but it didn’t work so 6:20 it is year round. When the alarm goes, I allow only 2 mins to lay there, then I am up and out of the house by 6:30 and no later. The only thing that changes whether I get up is rain. If its raining I don’t go. The light goes off at 10pm to effect sleep and I lay my clothes AND shoes out the night before. I even ignore the cats looking at me so I can get out the door. Ignoring them is hard to do, but well worth it.

  • Ashleykells

I love printing workout plans off pinterest that can be done while watching my favorite shows on Netflix. I usually plan for afternoons while my kids are napping, but I’ve been known to pull out the yoga mat while they watch Sesame Street too! I love that this way I feel like I’m still relaxing and enjoying “me time” while getting into shape!

  • Guest

I am up early and I prefer to get into work as early as I can and then do a workout when I get home. I have that downtime between arriving home and dinner or taking one of my girls to dance or meetings. I feel I take longer in the morning if I workout before work because I will need to shower or wash up all the sweat from the workout.

  • Mike Foster

After 20 years in the military, even though I retired in 2000, I still love getting up REAL early and doing my PT. I work shift work now, (1 month of nights,1 months of days) and I find that the night shift just ruins my motivation and makes it so easy to blow off a workout. But morning exercise is the best in my opinion.

    • Jaytree

Thank you for your service Mike. I too work shift work but alternate 12 hour nights and days within a 28 day rotation and it is very difficult to get a good routine, especially on nightshift. My biggest enemy is a two faced beast called procrastOperfect. I try to over engineer my workouts and have gone so far as to fabricating workout equipment during a workout because I couldn’t perform an exercise with the equipment in my gym(I workout in my shop). This usually ends with my routine(for lack of a better word) incomplete and a floor full of metal shavings.
I love to get up early but I’m captain sidetrack in the man cave. The hardest part is starting that first set.

  • Ellers

    Great tips! Thanks for this!

  • bazzaking38

i think i will start early gets you in a good frame of mind rather than feeling sleepy for 2 hours before you get out of bed

  • Shan AB

My only problem with working out in the morning, is that I am exhausted by lunch time. Does anyone have any tips to combat that? 🙂 Thanks.

    • priya

      have a good breakfast afterwards!

  • Marquieta Mitchell

I would love to workout in the morning but, how do you manage that and work? I leave at 8 AM for work and have two toddlers.
How is this possible for a working mom without burning yourself out?

  • Gretchen Hill

It’s really hard for me to wake up very early in the morning, so my alternative instead of jogging in the morning, i used to jog in the afternoon. If not, every morning I do some work out at home.

  • Jessica

Hi Everyone! I am new at blogging, have only done this once before. I just purchased the T25 workout program and was wondering if anyone of y’all tried it. I would like to do it in the morning because I find if I wait to later in the day than I find excuses not to workout. Any suggestions, please advise. Look forward to any advise y’all have to give me I will appreciate it! Thanks a Bunch in advance!

  • Nixygirl88

Is cycling on an exercise bike a work out? I’m worried its going to make my thighs muscley (better than fat I suppose). I could do this in the morning before work when my son is in bed? I really am shattered at the end of the day. Any tips for single mother exercise routine’s?

  • Bea

I would absolutely love to workout in the mornings, and have tried on a number of occassions but here is my problem and if ANYONE can find the solution I will forever be grateful. Although many people claim that working out gives them energy, I find that EVERY time I finish a workout I am pooped! it drains all of my energy, and instead of feeling more alert, I feel almost sluggish. I don’t know why! This almost forces me to have to workout in the evenings, which does not always work for me. If it makes any difference, I recently just started working out. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

    • running red

Bea After your workout make sure you have a snack. You could have burned more calories then you have in your system and this is why you feel sluggish cause your body needs some fuel. I like to have carrots or a banana after a hard workout to refuel and keep me going.

  • Tina Roda Joyce Gillies-Pimisk

I only do morning workouts because in the evening I am to exhausted. My job allows me to do morning physical training until 9:30 am. So hopefully with this program I can get my baby weight off by the time I get back to work.

  • Bridget

After I wake up in the mornings I play my yoga music and drink tea (takes me a half hour.) Then I do Am yoga to help me in the morning. Making it easy for me to go about my day.

  • Dorothy Purdy

I have actually just started morning workouts myself. Until recently, I always showered at night. I would try to get on the treadmill in the evenings, but I would either be really tired or to lazy to get going. I wasn’t sure about the mornings, but I found I really enjoy it! What really helps is getting to be a little earlier (even just a half hour helped) and having a treadmill in the house vs going out to a gym or outside. I know that getting a treadmill isn’t for everyone, but knowing I don’t have to get up and actually leave the house makes a world of difference. Then I have my excersie in for the day!
Also, by working out in the morning I eat better all day (using my fitness pal of course!) because I don’t want to ruin the hardwork I put in in the morning. When I tried to excersie at night, sometimes it would be like “well it isn’t worth it today because I am way over calorie budget anyway”. Mornings are well worth it for me!

  • samuraidarryl

I like mornings – even though I find it hard to get out of bed sometimes. Years back I went riding at 6:00 with a buddy on a bike track near the local lake – we kept each other honest. He stopped as he changed employment so that previous regime may be helping me. I run – walk – jog with a HRM (push it up / drop it down over and over again). I only do 5kms and start at 6:15. The idea of preparation of clothes etc is great as that is what I do – have it all laid out and no need to fumble in the dark in the morning. What motivates me is the result – I weigh myself EVERY morning and a group of us have a weekly “weigh-in”. So a lot of what I have read is relevant to me and works. Good luck everyone.

  • Jody

what are your thoughts on eating before your morning workout or doing it on an empty stomach?

    • Nick

You should always eat before you get up. Always eat something before and after you workout.

    • Josh

As far as running goes, something small before I work out in the mornings is perfect – a banana or even a glass of orange juice. My body needs at least a little bit of food after not eating for so many hours, but eating too much and then working out just makes me sick. I try to get in a more full breakfast afterwards.

  • Joy

I have trained myself that when the alarm goes off, my feet hit the floor!

  • Bes19

I’m an early exerciser, too. I love the way I feel all day after a morning work out. Does anyone have any good ideas for easy & healthy snacks before working out at 6 am?

  • Renee Knott

I workout in the morning being married with 3 kids its hard for me to focus or put time aside in the evening for a workout. Even thou my alarm goes off in the morning I still lay in bed but when I go realize what things have to be done within the day I go ahead and get up. I do workout videos so I have my things out so I will not disturb anyone.

  • rpmazzucchi

I prefer a work out after work. It is easy for me to go directly to the health club and complete a work-out before dinner. I tend to eat less and see the work out as an after work social engagement alternating cardio aerobics with weight lifting.

  • melhughes903

I am FORCED to work out in the mornings (4:30am) due to the gym being so “PACKED” after work (6pm).

  • Mucca

What are people’s thoughts on eating before a morning workout? I get up ravenously hungry each morning, but do not know the pros and cons about food and morning exercise. thanks for your input.

  • Jill D

I am a morning exerciser also! I am not thrilled when the alarm goes off but I tell myself I will feel so much better afterwards and I always do! I also have to say I have to say the past few months I have been having insomnia and it is getting tougher getting out of bed in the morning lately. Still trying to figure that out so I wake up refreshed and get a great workout again!

  • JanDesign

I know this comment is late, but I have 2 more tips. I am still working on being a morning-workout person, or even just a morning-person, but two things that are working are:

    1) get an accountability buddy. The article lists this in #3 above, but you can even do this with someone long distance if you use a site like My Fitness Pal. They will be able to check the date/time of your workout, and vice versa.(The rest is left to the honor system).

    2) get moving just a little bit. To go from a complete rest state to a full blown workout is a tall order. Get your circulation flowing while still in bed by doing leg lifts, arm circles, etc. It really starts waking your body up.

  • Walking Danielle

Those are all great tips. But the one I was hoping you would also include is whether to eat something before you work out in the morning. I never seem to get it right. If I don’t eat then I struggle with energy through my workout. If I do then I find I need to wait before I can work out. Any suggestions?

  • Practiceprice

I usually work out in the early afternoon. I like my sleep!!

  • RoRo

Great article! Thank you so much! I temporarily live in a hot 90 degree and over 90% humidity climate. Because of the heat I get very tired and demotivated by the time I finish work. I drag myself to the gym. It’s awful. I don’t even attempt to go for a run. It feels like it’s 120 degrees and where I live there a lots of smokers and it’s just gross to run behind them in this terrible heat. I started to run in the morning and it was a big deal in the beginning. Now it is simply awesome, and you get so energized and motivated by your own achievements! And there are no people, no cars, just you and your music. I’m ditchng my gym (it isn’t very good and started to hate going there) and will do the HIIT workouts before my morning runs. You just get it out of your way before some people even wake up. Feels good. And I am an owl, NOT a morning person. I wake up while I slowly joging to get to the park and then I’m feeling great. Will never stop my morning workouts and runs! Try it and you won’t regret it. And as the author said, you will only regret the workout you didn’t do. I experience that whenever I miss a run… But then I make up for that! Thanks for a great advise to schedule the workouts. I hope that will get me more organized.

  • DaQTone

I work Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. I hate waking up that early in the morning but I love to keep my shape and fitness. So, my workout schedule is MTR right after work for an hour each day, then I workout Saturday mornings for two hours. I think about it that I don’t finish work until 6:30 or 7 p.m. and not separate my workout routine from my work schedule. I LOVE it and love the restful nigh sleep I get as a result!!!

  • DDBelle

I simply look at working out in the morning the same way I look at brushing my teeth, it is one of the things that I do to get ready for the day.

  • Cherrikim

I prefer mornings between 5-5:30am. I literally roll out of bed into my workout clothes & drag myself into the living room to exercise. I plan what I’m going to do the night before & if something goes wrong I pop in one of my trusty exercise dvd’s. No excuses.

  • Felicia Streeter

I like early mornings before everyone gets up. I hate people talking to me or standing there watching while I’m exercising. It’s the only time I get for myself. I get up because it’s the only part of the day that doesn’t get interrupted. Plus I’m a morning person so getting up an hour early not that difficult especially when you make sure you go to bed on time.

  • lmotsing

My new husband taught me how to get up in the morning…no compromise. Imagine, newlyweds, the alarm went off at 5am, he turned it off and swung his legs out of bed. I marveled as I always would hit the snooze 3-4 times which really did just make me more sluggish and crabby. Now we’re married 15 years, same drill. Only now I’m up with him at 4:30am and I’m off to the gym. Discipline leads to perseverance which leads to success. I had a back surgery a little over a year ago and gain 15 pounds. Once I was able to be active again all those previous years of discipline kicked in and I’ve lost the 15 pounds – not as difficult as it could have been.

  • Lisa

My husband has worked out everyday for a year and half..but I can’t make myself jump up to join him. I need a good energy drink to help me any suggestions

  • sharone

I am lazy, I go to bed at a descent hour, but, I tend to stay up watching a TV program/movie. I know I need to prepare in the evening, and just get up. Is it depressing after being retired for about 2 years now. I need motivation, I have lost 4 lbs in the past month, I belong to a wellness gym center, which I attend 3-4 times a week. I know I need to be more dedicated to my health.

  • Kenna Krumrine

This has really been a great thing for me to read, im going to start next Tuesday and start by power walkingand ease my way up to jogging then running. I haven’t (seriously) worked out in almost 8 years. I have done wii fit u and thats awesome but I need to start a new morning routine.

  • Kate Elson

New to all this + found the article very helpful. Should I have anything to eat b4 going for morning run? Was thinking maybe just a banana?

  • Tracy Nicholson

I’m in training for running 5K and I’ve been doing my running training sessions between 7.30/8am. They work for me. I seem to be at my best in mornings forcsome reason. Surprised the energy I have that early.

  • Adrian Milliner

I’m more prone to injury from early runs. There’s time pressure and don’t warm up enough. Having said that, I enjoy morning workouts more. You meet nicer people on the trails first thing 🙂

  • Rick Meyer

I am best at 6am spinning classes or yoga classes or swimming laps and weights. Work out generally 6 days a week and always before noon but I am retired and have the time available.

  • SharonS

I like to work out in the morning (4:25!) during the school year–too many excuses after school! I ride my recumbent bike and have just added Couch 2 5K to the mix. Lol I keep my workout clothes and shoes in a pile right next to the toilet–change out of PJs and into them that first moment I’m awake. I also drink a V8 Fusion Energy drink while I ride. I think that little jolt of caffeine helps.

  • Mia

    I’ve just

  • Jamie

I keep my favorite shows on the DVR and only watch them on morning workouts – with two little ones and little time for what I want to watch on tv – this helps me get out of bed to catch up on my shows

  • Vero

AM workouts are the only way to go for me, I’m to tierd and lazy to excercise in the PM

  • Maureen

I have been walking 15 min 5 days a week every morning before work . I am going 20 min a day . I do the total gym at night

  • Patsy

I walk every single morning. I started out slow and easy and have built up to 1 mile per day. I have gotten so used to it, I enjoy it, I look forward to it, I have become addicted to it. My body now craves it. Never in my life did I ever think I could do this. I’m so glad I did. I have lost 10 lbs and I feel so much better. Blood pressure is down. I am 70 years old.

  • Joshua Daniel Begley

I do mornings because then I have a GOOD excuse why I won’t do it later in the day.
Plus I found that getting up and going 4 to 5 days a week us better than easing into it. Your body adapts lot faster then most people think.

  • Debbie Johnson Back

I have found I am definitely a morning workout person, although I do my runs after work when the time changes. I struggled for years trying to lose weight and as soon as I got my early morning workout routine established have dropped almost 60 pounds.

  • Mary

I LOVE my morning workouts. I get up at 5:00 a.m. and I am at the gym by 5:30 a.m. when they open up. All the tips you have gave, I do. I have joined exercise classes, I made many friends from doing that, and I don’t want to let them down, if I don’t show up. I lay out my gym clothes.clothes the night before and pack my gym bag too.
I get up because of my gym friends!!!!!
One tip about packing your gym bag, leave extra underwear, socks, belts, bras…
Even though I have my own locker at the gym for my personal everyday stuff – sometimes I forget those important under clothes.

  • Pamela Heath

I workout most days even if it’s the modifier due to a neck injury . I have lost 105 llbs am now 7-8 llbs from my personal goal might then review. These last few llbs are proving difficult compared to the beginning when I lost my main weight. I find a workout therapeutic also get abundance of energy. I’ve found the fitness pal very helpful. You need to be in the mindset for wanting to lose weight otherwise it won’t work . I do try to eat sensibly but like everyone I’m only human , I’m now focused on my last hurdle which I’m hoping to achieve within the next few weeks . So when you feel like giving up please don’t I’ve done it so many times but I have now changed my life , pamela

  • rodrigo

what do you guys eat before a morning workout?

    • Josh

I usually eat a banana or drink a glass of orange juice, something light, and then eat a full breakfast after the workout.

    • priya

i eat a lateish dinner, so i generally dont eat before a morning workout. that said, if i do a morning workout, i get up, change, and go. otherwise i will eat, then i need a good hour before i go, and things then may not go so well.
good things the morning of though are a piece of toast, a banana, a cup of berries, 1/2 c of yogurt/greek yogurt or soymilk, etc. some people like nut butter but i find that a BIT of carbs or protein are better than fats. but not too many simple carbs (ie dried fruit or fruit juice)

  • Marc De St Pern

I’m a big fan of working out in the morning, kickick starts the say. In the winter months I use WiFi connected lights and set a timer for them to turn on and gradually brighten over 15 minutes before its time to get up, it makes a world of difference 🙂

  • chiori

speak for youeself on the work out buddy, i go walking anytime between 7:30 to 11: am had 4 different partners on different days to go with then one by one they all stopped and claimed other excuses. so Now I have to ask my daughter to go with with me. she is home schooled so she has to do 50 minutes of P.E. so I tell her to just walk with me. we can burn 300 + calories together. but it take her time get to up in the morning.

  • Jennifer

I have a Toddler which means that the only time I can exercise is in the morning. So, I am up at 4:45am, exercise till 5:30am, shower / dress by 6am, have breakfast by 6:30am, get my daughter up at 6:45 to leave for daycare by 7:30.

  • Samantha Burrow

I’d love to work out in the morning but I already have to get up at 6am for work…5am just seems impossible!

  • Lizzy Collins Love

1pm , 2 Pm are optimal workout time when i dont have school. and 5pm 5:30 pm , 6 pm and 7pm the latest are the best for me during the school week

  • Sam Farman

I sleep in my running clothes. This is probably why I’m single 😉

    • Becca Warner

I literally lol’d at that, thanks! But it actually isn’t that bad of an idea.

      • Chiina80

… I do the same lol and I’m single too (high five)

        • Yvette365985

I currently make approximately 6000-8000 bucks monthly working from home online. So if you are willing to work easy at home jobs for few hours /a day from comfort of your home and get solid payment for doing it… Try this gig UR1.CA/p7vw7

    • jango

      Lmao 🙂

    • kamhite

I do the same and Im married. That’s the best way to jump out of bed brush my teeth and go!!

    • Drwerer

Hopefully before your run and not after, or that would explain it for sure 😉

    • Angela

That is hilarious but I might start doing the same. 🙂

    • Jones Robin

Funny. I was literally just thinking that maybe I should do that. ha!

    • narek2145

That totally works for me too! I find that if I can eliminate the one task of getting dressed I am more than halfway to working out! (And really, are workout clothes that much worse looking than what a lot of us normally sleep in?) I also find I need a bite to eat when I first wake up, so on mornings I run, I eat a PowerBar before I leave the house or in the car on the way to meet friends.

I tried different times of day, but soon realised early mornings were the only times I would be sure to get a regular workout and now I manage 5 – 6 sessions per week. Packing the gym bag is important – I quickly learned to have an emergency pair of undies and socks in there all the time! The number of times I have been glad of that!

  • Amber

Sometimes I find that if I give myself a treat for my morning workout like letting myself stop at my favorite juice or smoothie bar after the workout is a good instentive to getting up. I’ll only let myself go to that place if I’ve worked out in the morning. Works pretty good!

  • Christa

My daughter just started pre-K this year so I’ve made it a habit to drop her off at 8am, and head straight for the gym! I do a lot of what this article suggested- pack my bags at night, lay out my clothes, have everything ready for me to get up, get the kids dressed, and go! It’s been great!

  • Jaime

I found a gym where I had to sign up for 6am classes and if you miss, it’ll cost you $8!! It’s a great motivator! When I know it will be extra difficult to get up the next morning, I sleep in my workout pants!

  • Tazman

I’d like to comment here…I hate morning workouts. HOWEVER, both times I have lost a lot of weight was when I worked out early in the morning. I have tried all things you have said, but still don’t like them. But it work better for my body. You have to learn to listen to your body, not your mind. The “hating the morning workouts” thing is 99% all in your head. Do what is right for you body and when it responds best. Not that morning workouts are for everyone, but if it works, you should do it. I prefer the lunchtime workout best. And have had good success there too, but you can’t always work that out.

And I don’t know about you guys…but our gym turns into a bar atmosphere after 5pm…lots of talking, hanging out…and just generally being in the way. LOL…my temper keeps me away! hahahaha…

  • seanm23

have my coffee its ok then take preworkout and its on my preworkout actually motivates me think its the beta alanine cause I can feel it tried no beta alanine no energy nothing think its cause you can feel the tingling

  • Jennifer

I am trying to do at least 1/2 of my daily workout in the morning. What worked for me is do set up the early morning workout as something I can do at home. So I alternate my strength training and yoga days in the morning and do my cardio at night in the gym. Since I don’t have to leave my bedroom to workout it makes for less excuses.

If you work with a personal trainer you can ask them to write out a workout plan that you can do with the equipment you already own.

My difficulty is I have two conflicting schedules at the minute which allow me little time for doing any kind of anything – let alone exercise.
However, from previous success I definitely know that it is worth every moment of it and once it becomes a part of your routine it’s more difficult to let yourself down and not exercise than it is to get up and go!

Hello my good people, i want to let you know that there are so many scam in the net, so you have to be careful, with the spell caster you contact okay, My name is Linda Marian from USA I have to give this miraculous testimony, which is still unbelievable to me until now. I had a problem with my husband 4years ago, which lead to our break up. when he broke up with me, I was not my self again, i felt so empty inside me, my love and financial situation became worst, until a close friend of mine called sandy told me about a spell caster who helped her in the same problem, his name is Dr AJACAS. she tell me so much about the Dr that help her, and i all so email Dr AJACAS the spell caster and i told him my problem and i did what he ask me to do, and he told me that i should not worry my self that it will only take one day for he to cast the spell that will bring he back, Before i knew what was happening my husband look for my number and called me and told me that he was coming back to me in 2days and i was so happy to have him back to me. We have two kids together and we are happy. I am on a Masters Swimming team and my only option for pool time is at 5:15 am. Did I mention that I am a die hard night owl?? Getting up in the morning is absolutely painful for me. Does anyone have tips for the night owls among us?

  • Techno Spice

I’ve tried working out in the morning and I just feel heavier and more sluggish in the mornings. I literally do not perform as well and I have more days when I can do less than the previous day — my results seem to be more erratic, and I think it just has to do with not having a day of moving around to offset the particularities of how well I slept.

  • Sandra Toth

I stretch for about ten minutes before getting out of bed. Puts me in tune with my body and I know what isn’t working before I get to the gym. Drink water upon rising and then, just do it! I take classes, so just the fact that the same people will be there to greet me, and will miss me if I’m not there, that helps too.

  • DMPCPS

I was an evening/after work person, but my job never gets me out the door on time and I perform with 2 orchestras with evening rehearsals, so I switched it up to the morning. I lay my clothes out the night before and get up at 5:00. I get dressed, brush my teeth, and head out the door by 5:20am. My gym shoes, hand weights, yoga mat, and water bottle are kept in my trunk so I never worry about forgetting them. Since I attend a class I am motivated to arrive on time. Class starts at 5:45am. The first week was a little rough, but once I dialed in my new bed time (9:30pm) I was ready to roll.

  • Lucie

Hi, i just want to Know what you have to drink or eat before training early in the morning ?
    Thanks!

  • Denise

I tell myself that although I feel sleepy when the alarm sounds, if I just get out of bed, by the time I am out the door for my run, I will be awake and feel great! Also, I love the feeling of having my workout finished by 7am.

  • Mady1

I prefer morning exercise but I find it sets me off kilter breakfast wise, then almost food wise all day. Do people go out on empty?! Or have some fruit first then breakfast later when they get back or first go to work? I’d appreciate recommendations, because at the moment I’m not getting the balance right either way.

  • linnaea

how I got started was my hypothyroid meds are to be taken 1 hr before i eat in the am, so i started getting up a bit earlier and then what was I suppose to do now? so i started using the treadmill at home and then bought some weights and now have a routine.

  • Onlyzuul

I used to workout in the mornings. And I found that when I did that, I had more energy during the day and I could go to sleep earlier. My spouse is a night owl, so it has been hard to get to bed before 12:30 am. Currently, I am trying to get motivated after breaking my ankle last month. I miss the high impact cardio I used to do. I’m trying to put together exercises I can do at home, like HIIT, that will burn the 20 pounds I’ve packed on.

  • Klap

Does anyone have suggestions for when/what to eat if you exercising in the morning?

  • Alena VanDrielen

Thank you! The simplest ideas are often the ones we overlook. Start with once a week…slap forehead, why didn’t I think I that”!

  • Adrian Velez

Working out in the morning is fine. I would prefer it. But I have to be at work by 6:30 AM and an hour commute is part of my morning ritual. Working out after work is my most realistic option.

  • Melissa Castle

Does anyone do HIIT workouts first thing in the a.m.? That’s what I’d like to do once or twice a week, but I wonder if I’d be awake/energetic enough to put as much effort into as possible. I’m still working on getting better sleep, but I hope at some point I’ll be able to get into working out in the morning.

  • Zspinz

I tuck my alarm clock (iPhone) in my shoe a little ways out of reach… This make me have to deliberately grab for it, and makes me remember why it’s going off in the first place…

  • Hutch

I am up at 4:40am at he gym by 5. 45-60 workout, home to make my wife and daughter breakfast along with myself. Quick shower and start my day ready to go. I even throw in a 3-5 mile in addition to the gym somedays. Started slow though. 15min walking 4 years ago. Lost 50lbs and at 45 in the best shape of my life. If I can do it. You can too.

  • Amber

I’ve been doing early morning workouts since the New Year, and what has helped me the most has been to put my alarm (my phone) all the way across the room. Once I’m out of bed, it’s easier to reason myself into the next step – getting dressed – then the next step, and the next, until I’m actually at the gym.

  • mimi

Early mornings for me. 5 a.m. 5 days a week. No excuses not to. I love that time of day. Been working out at that time for probably 10 years now.

  • Angelpearls

I workout after the kids get on the bus. I’ve had to get up anyway to prepare them for school anyway. Once they’re on the bus, I put my workout gear on and head to the gym or workout at home.

I just like getting the workout out of the way. I find that I’m too tired to workout in the afternoon or evening because of getting up so early for the kids.

  • Anna

Should I eat before or after I run?

  • Brittney B

It is much easier to say “go to bed earlier” than to actually do it but it just becomes a trend as you do more morning workout sessions! The first week I was running a little low on energy but you start to normalize a schedule and your body is ready to fall asleep earlier when you get on that schedule. It really sometimes does stink at first but your body adjusts! Stick with it… You’ll be glad to get that workout done And over with so its not guilting you in the back of your mind all day (or at least that’s how I feel lol).

  • evelyn

I don’t know why I just can’t get ready and go to the gym and work it out. I make excuses alot and now I’m in a bad health. I Need Help And A WORK Out Buddy Who Can Be My Strength Seem Like I CAN’T Do It On My own!

  • Lisat

I have done this and am now lying in bed sick as a dog – just seems to drain me getting to Pilates at 6am most mornings, then a full day at work and home by 7 / 8pm. Is it just me?

    • Kathleen Keegan

Nope I’ve done that too your pushing yourself too hard ease back a little alternate the days and find something a little less stressful on the off days like walking but get better first and then ease back into it you don’t want make yourself more sicker

  • superchick

i love going for my morning walk and note progressed top a run/walk. Like you I lay my clothes out night before and when alarm goes off I just go to auto pilot and dress and head out the door. The days I have skipped I feel guilty for the rest of the day. It’s a great feeling to get it out of the way and enjoy the rest of your day knowing you have already done your exercise for the day.

  • Becky

I have always been a “I’ll work out after work” which resulted in about 1 workout a week because I would be to tired, decide to join some friends for dinner, get home and a show would be on I couldn’t miss. I started doing morning workouts 4 weeks ago and eased into them. Now I work out 5 days a week! I love how I feel all day after a 3 mile run in the mornings. I am at a work conference all week and have ran each morning. I have more energy all day and am ready for bed at 9:00 to bounce up at 5:45 and do it all over again. Morning workouts are the BEST 🙂

  • Gabi

I have one question though. What is the breakfast policy in this case. When and what do you eat? I feel like I have no energy before breakfast so having a training session on an empty stomac sounds unlikely. On the other hand I would have to give at least 30 o 40 minutes between breakfast and the workout.

  • Treadmillmom1st

Hi. I’ve been getting up at 5.50am Mon -Fri to workout for years. My reason is I work full time and have 3 children, my evenings are filled with childcare and domesticity, often not sitting down till 9pm or later. There is no way I could consider a workout then, when would I spend time with my husband lol. 6am works well, children are asleep, husband is asleep, when I’m done everyone is just waking up.

  • David Clark

I’m a big fan of the morning workout. Laying clothes the night before works well. Getting to bed early enough is also critical. But realizing that it functions as me time is what motivates me the most.

  • D2

    I put my gym
Clothes on the floor beside my bed Nd my work clothes and other stuff in my gym bag the night before.
And I have my gym buddies guilt me if I don’t show up

  • Kelly

Good tips! I’m sure some of these will be quite useful tactics in keeping up with this newbie on her morning workouts!

  • 1derwmn33

Having a mint or chewing gum also helps me wake up for workouts

  • Jimmy

I need a job where I get paid to provide obvious and generic advice.

  • Steve

I get up every morning at 4:30 to get my workouts in. I’ve been doing this for a few years now. Getting my workout over and done is the biggest reason I get to of bed so early plus it makes me feel good and pumped all day.

  • Adrian Milliner

i do most of those except writing out a plan. I also promise to someone else that I’ll do it. Similar to a workout buddy but without the inconvenience of mutual reliance.

  • Bluesky2u

I start work at 6 am and work til 6pm. It’s been hard to get in any workouts with this alternative schedule my job has put us on. But I’m trying.

    • Kathleen Keegan

I hear you I live in Massachusetts and right now it’s snowing I went out earlier and shoveled came back in and went back to sleep but a normal day for me is up at 530 and out the door at 630 for my first pick up in between that I’m doing dishes cleanup after the husband and kids and get ready for work that’s my work out and I somet don’t gey he until 640:7 and then I have to switch cars if I want to go to the gymy schedule varies every day so it’s hard to fit in s work out sometimes and I’m so hungry by the time I get home I est and it’s off to bed ugh suggestions

  • Chris Mellor

Omg! I did that same thing last night. All except my race shirt. It had my bib safety pinned on.

  • megan

Yay! Just started becoming a morning exerciser! Although I do like having something to look forward to after work 😀

  • Claire

#4,5,8. Thanks for the great ideas. I lay out my clothes for work, it makes sense to do the same for my workout.

  • lolknee .

I go to the gym for 2 hours every morning before work. The gym is on the same block as my office and 4 miles away from my home. I would like to run to the gym and then do my workout and then go to the office, but I am unsure of how to get my suit there. Usually I take the train so I get dressed as if going to work, change to gym clothes in the gym, shower and then change back. In this scenario I would need to run to the gym in gym clothes and still transport a suit, shirt, tie, sock, shoes etc without wrinkling them.

    Any advice?

Avoid jacking off or having sex the night prior as well

Ever since November 2014, I’ve tried to pretend I’m one of “them”—those chirpy, cheerful folks who rise effortlessly at dawn to go after that proverbial worm. I’ve also spent few months suppressing the urge to complain bitterly about a world where night owls like me suffer grievous discrimination at the hands of those ubiquitous “normal” people. So those who know me best are always startled—no, make that shocked—to find out that I do most of my exercising in the early hours of the day, anywhere from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m using an android app named, Rewire-Habit & Goal Tracker. They’re even more astonished to discover that when I first started tracking habits my habit-related tasks were categorized as my work and personal ones.Rewire-Habit & Goal Tracker lets you set them for any time you want. You can also set reminders to occur on specific days of the week,at regular intervals (every three days, say), or a certain number of times per week. For habits that need to be obeyed only on certain days, you won’t see them on your list until the designated day. For example, I’m trying to read about Yoga-a physical, mental, and spiritual practice or discipline that denotes a variety of schools, practices and goals, popular in India every Saturday;that reminder doesn’t show up on my habit list until Saturday. An added statistic screen also shows percentage by week and for all the time. Change in color for a color blind like me made it easier to use. This has really helped me a lot, hope it helps you too. 🙂

Walking has changed my life … whether you do it in the morning, afternoon or at night – the benefits are countless. My biggest changes were:

walking is like my anti depressant, and what I mean is it somehow boosts my mood and energy by 300%

I am continuously loosing weight as walking has boosted my metabolism drastically

I sleep better now than I have ever before in my life.

Keep in my mind that prior to taking up walking, the only exercise I did was golfing ooccasionally. So for a guy that needed a start I am very happy with the results from walking almosr daily.

  • Mike

I have problems doing workouts in the morning. I’m most energetic during the afternoon and evening which means taking the time to exercise and a less social life. I try morning workoits but after a warm up, set of weights and situps, it feels as if my chest is heavier than the weights. Thanks for the article. Will try.

My names are Taisia Joan am from USA i want to use this opportunity to thank my great doctor who really made my life a pleasurable one today. This great Doctor brought my husband back to me, i had 3 lovely kids for my husband, about 3 years ago i and my husband has been into one quarrel or the other until he finally left me for one lady. i felt my life was over and my kids thought then will never see their father again. i tried to be strong just for the kids but i couldn’t control the pains that torments my heart, my heart was filled with sorrows and pains because i was really in love with my husband. Every day and night i think of him and i always wish he will come back to me, until one day i met a good friend of mine that was also in a situation like me but her problem was her ex-boyfriend who she had an unwanted pregnancy for and he refused to take responsibility and dumped her. she told me that mine was a small case and that i shouldn’t worry about it at all so i asked her what was the solution to my problems and she gave me this great man phone number and his email address. i was doubting if this man was the solution, so i contacted this great man and he told me what to do and i deed them all, he told me to wait for just seven days and that my husband will come crawling on his kneels just for forgiveness so i faithfully deed what this great man asked me to do and for sure after four days i heard a knock on the door, in a great surprise i saw him on his kneels and i was speechless, when he saw me, all he did was crying and asking me for forgiveness, from that day, all the pains and sorrows in my heart flew away, since then i and my husband and our lovely kids are happy.that is why i want to say a big thanks to Dr iayaryi. Vivian After being in marriage with Clem for 8 years,he
broke up our marriage, I did everything possible to bring our marriage back but all
    was in
vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have
for him and for our two kinds, just to make a better mom to our kinds, and to protect my family. I
begged him with everything even with the name of our kinds, I made promises but he
    refused. I
explained my problem to someone online and she
    suggested that I should
rather contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell
    to bring
our marriage back but I am the type that never believed in spell, I had
    no
choice than to try it, I mailed the spell caster, and he told me
    there
was no problem that everything will be okay before four
    days, that my
husband will return to me before four days, he cast the spell and
surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My husband
    called me, I
was so surprised, I answered the call and all he says was
    that he was
    so
sorry for everything that happened, that he is very very sorry for the
pains he has put me and with our kinds, that he wanted us to
    return to
him, that he loves us so much. I was so happy and went to
    him with our kinds, that
was how we started living together happily again as one family, Since then
    I have
made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship
    problem, I
would be of help to such person by referring him or her to
    the only
real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own
    marriage problems and

  • Wimberly William

My passion for love and life has made me to take to the Internet to

warn Internet users particularly those in search of solution to their

problems to beware of and avoid comments about spell caster that can

use their magical power in helping you out with your problems. I don’t

want anyone to be fooled because i was a victim of this fraudsters

who claimed to be spell casters. I am Wimberly William and i was having

a difficult time in my relationship as my wife couldn’t give birth to a

child. Although my wife and i loved each other very much as it were.We kept on

hoping and for 6 years there weren’t any sign of breakthrough .As days

goes by,i will always weep because at that time i was really down.

Even though my wife tried to always be by my side, only time would

tell as we couldn’t cope with pressure coming from friends and she had to leave

me for another man. I was now left to face my problem alone even

though my mom would always talk to me and console me on phone. Things

went from bad to worse when i was sacked from the private organization

i was working because been happily married was a criteria that was

needed and that i was now lacking owing to my failure to have a child that has made my

wife leave me for another man leaving me single. I kept on

searching and hoping i would find a solution to my problem but there

wasn’t any coming. I contacted lots of spell caster as i saw them on

the Internet but all were scams as they demanded money from me

frequently and nothing happened. i had to relocate from Texas city

United state to Jamaica where my mom was residing and also because i

became racially abused because of my color .I spent 4 months with my

mom and together we kept on looking for solution still to no avail.

There came a faithful day when i met my high school mate who knew i

was happily married and living in Texas city United state with my

wife and had to ask why i flew back to Jamaica. I explained my

problem to her and with sincere desire in wanting my problems solved

she led me to DR JAMIN ABAYOMI. Although i was doubtful but soon as i

explained my problem to him,he laughed and gave me a maximum of

72 hours for my wife to come back and for she go give birth. I

did all i was asked to do which included me traveling back to Texas

city United state. I traveled back to Texas city united state,on my

arrival during the early hours of the morning,my phone rang and guess

who?it was my wife who called asking for my forgiveness and saying

she was coming back home. She came few hours later and on her knees she

pleaded for forgiveness. Although it was a tough decision for me to

make because of all the pains i have been through. I love her and

needed her back so i had no option but to forgive her. We sat together

and while she was resting her head on my chest we had romantic

conversation and talked about things that we have never spoken about

and like husband and wife the urge came to have sex and we had sex for

a very long time that day. The next day which was still within the

72 hours given by DOCTOR JAMIN ABAYOMI she felt something different in her

body and immediately she went for a check up and to our greatest

surprise, she was pregnant. How possible could this be but it happened

and am very thankful also my skin color that made me racially abused

was changed to the preferred and now we are now happily married again

and no racial discrimination. All thanks to DR JAMIN ABAYOMI for his

    solution.

ARE YOU FACED WITH SIMILAR PROBLEM OR ANY KIND OF PROBLEM.PLEASE KNOW

THAT DR JAMIN ABAYOMI isn’t on the Internet so kindly contact him via

  • Hi Elle,
I think waking up early is something that a lot of people struggle with. I am so envious of those early risers that always get a headstart on the day while I’m still fighting with the snooze button! I know that you are a fan of the morning work out, but do you think they are just inherently better for you? I understand all the pro’s, but what kind of research is out there that promotes the morning as the best time for exercise?

  • Cristofer Mattern

I’m married with 2 kids and almost always sleep in my workout shorts and shirt. I work out from home on my tread climber and sometimes jog. I want to start lifting weights again too.

  • Mary Smith Hansen

I sleep in my walking clothes and just need coffee and toothbrush (& shoes) before I head out the door. My walking buddy and I have become good friends over the past six months. I look forward to continuing my workouts in 2016!

  • Brooke

I drink lemon ice water and take it with me. Food? Organfi Green Drink (Drew Canole) Google him! I got it on Amazon since I have that card already. Exercise? If it is too cold to walk outside I do laps around the house with my pets chasing me. Yeah. They love it. I do too! Misfit Shine counts my steps. And it goes with me to the indoor pool for water aerobics. I just take it one day at a time. Have fun!

  • HebbaM

I get up and hop on my recumbent bike for 20 then walk 1 1/2 to 2 miles before work. If I skip it, I feel guilty the rest of the day. Also motivated since I’m in FitBit step challenges and can’t be last!!

  • Mary M

I have been running (now jogging) in the morning (5:00 – 6:00) for about 40 years. It has worked for me. I remember when a morning workout was suggested to me. My first thought was that I could not exercise on an empty stomach. I usually just drink a glass of cranberry juice and head out. The rest of my day is open. Many thanks to my friend who suggested it so long ago. By the way, I am 62, look 50 and feel great!

  • Annie

I started working out in the morning about a year ago (previously always worked out after work) and my weight loss has stalled ever since 🙁

  • SophiaV

Go to gym in the morning for couple reasons: 1. get ready before work, get energized, and think through my daily schedule during exercises 2. like to have my evenings open to spend time with friends or family.

  • Nice! It’s always works to pre-plan things. Half of your work has done when you have planed them. This is really helpful. Thanks!

he finally left me for one lady. i felt my life was over and my kids
thought they would never see their father again. i tried to be strong

and that i shouldn’t worry about it at all so i asked her what was the
solution to my problems and she gave me this great man phone number and
his email address. i was doubting if this man was the solution, so
contacted this great man and he told me what to do and i deed them all,
he told me to wait for just two day and that my husband will come
crawling on his kneels just for forgiveness so i faithfully deed what
this great man asked me to do and for sure after two days i heard a
knock on the door, in a great surprise saw him on his kneels and i was
speechless, when he saw me, all he did was crying and asking me for
forgiveness, from that day, all the pains and sorrows in my heart flew

DOCTOR OHIRI is indeed a great and powerful man. I am Frank Davis by name am from England. My girlfriend left me and didn’t want any contact with me, not even friendship. She said it was over between us and told me to move on with my life. She ignored my e-mails and refused to answer or return my phone calls. She called me an obsessed psychotic stalker and even threatened me with cops and restraining orders if I showed up. I was absolutely heartbroken and devastated. I thought my case was impossible to resolve until I found DOCTOR OHIRI on the internet. DOCTOR OHIRI casted a spell for me and my situation made a miraculous turn around like something out of a movie or fairy tale with a happy ending. I had a wonderful conversation with my girlfriend After 6 months of no contact, during which she offered out of the blue to come and spend time with me. My relationship has been consistently wonderful and stable. I still cant believe it, it is like a huge burden has been lifted from my shoulders. Thanks to the wonderful work of DOCTOR OHIRI.
