FICTION: Probiotic supplements will immediately fix all your gut health needs.
FACT: “Probiotics are not a magic cure-all,” says Dr. Laster. “Sure, some supplements might help, but they can’t make up for a poor diet.”
So, prioritize improving the quality of your diet first. Increase fiber and reduce processed foods. Probiotics can then be supplemental to your healthy habits.
FICTION: Eating fermented foods will give you good gut health.
FACT: Fermented foods are beneficial for gut health, but they aren’t a one-stop-shop solution for improving gut health. If you don’t prioritize a healthy diet—one that incorporates a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and other fiber-rich foods—fermented foods alone won’t lead to positive results.
Prioritize improving your daily eating habits first, and limit added sugars. This is key—eating fermented foods is a bonus.
FICTION: Apple cider vinegar can act as a cure-all for various digestive issues.
FACT: “While ACV does contain beneficial properties, there’s insufficient scientific evidence supporting the idea that it can significantly improve overall gut health or resolve complex digestive disorders alone,” Dr. Laster clarifies.
So, sure, take a shot of apple cider vinegar if you want. But don’t rely on it to solely improve your gut health.
FICTION: Avoiding gluten universally improves gut health.
FACT: This is true for some, but not all. “Some individuals have a true gluten/wheat allergy, some have Celiac disease, and others may have a sensitivity,” says Dr. Laster. “For others, though, reactions are to emulsifiers and additives in food products.”
Instead of just avoiding gluten, consult your doctor, who may test for allergies or celiac disease.
FICTION: Dairy is inherently bad for everyone’s digestive system.
FACT: “This can change over the course of a person’s lifespan,” explains Dr. Laster. “Most children are born with enzymes that help digest dairy. But, for many, those enzymes decrease with older age. This means we might only handle small dairy amounts, but it varies per person. Too much dairy can cause bloating, acne, or stomach issues. For example, yogurt tends to be easier on the stomach due to the probiotics helping with digestion.”
