One of the keys to a successful Mediterranean diet is olive oil. It’s packed with polyphenols that act as antioxidants and reduce inflammation in the body. One way to absorb all of the benefits olive oil has to offer is to add a shot of it to your morning smoothie.

This chocolate version is thick and velvety thanks to avocado and is full of superfoods like reishi mushroom powder, collagen powder, olive oil and dates.

Feel free to skip the fancy powders and sub in your go-to protein powder. To make sure your smoothie doesn’t taste “powdery,” use a two-step blending process so the different supplements and cocoa powder can hydrate and better incorporate with the other ingredients.

Chocolate, Avocado and Olive Oil Smoothie

Serves 2

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (250ml) unsweetened almond or coconut milk, plus more as needed
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) olive oil
  • 1/4 cup (20g) collagen powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons reishi mushroom powder
  • 2 Medjool dates, pitted
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • 1/2 ripe Hass avocado, pitted, peeled and chopped
  • 2 cups (227g) ice cubes

Directions:

  1. In a blender, combine the almond milk, olive oil, collagen powder, cocoa powder, reishi powder, dates and salt. Blend it until the mixture is almost smooth. (This is step one of the two-step blending process.)
  2. Add the avocado and ice and blend until very smooth. (Step two of the two-step blend.) If your smoothie is too thick, gradually add more almond milk.
  3. Divide between two glasses and drink right away.
