So You Want to Start… Practicing Yoga (Video!)

In This Article

According to our recent Fitness Tribes survey, yoga is the number 1 group exercise you wanted to start doing this year. Trying something new can be intimidating, so I sat down with master yoga instructor Laura Camp of Flying Yoga in Oakland, CA to alleviate some of your fears. Take a look!

Tips to keep in mind when you’re starting out:

Try before you buy Take advantage of free class offers from yoga studios, and try different types of yoga.

Arrive early and prepared Bringing your own mat is customary, so be sure to get to class about 15 minutes early to stake out your space and meet the instructor.

Don’t push anything Yoga should feel good, not forced. Back off if your body isn’t comfortable in a pose. There’s always a way to modify when something isn’t working.

Relax! If you can’t stretch as far as your neighbor, just smile and trust that you’re already exactly where you need to be. And don’t be afraid of looking silly—no one is watching you, I promise!

Special thanks to YogaOutlet.com for providing wardrobe for this video.

How did your first yoga class go? Did you feel out of place? Did you take a friend? Will you be going back? Share in the comments!
