9 Songs From 2017 that Should Be on Your 2018 Playlist

A new year brings in new music to add to a running playlist. But that doesn’t mean you should leave behind your old favorites from 2017. All nine of these songs were beyond popular and even topped several year-end “best of” lists. Whether you’ve had them on repeat for months or they’re completely new to you, these tunes deserve a permanent spot in your rotation for 2018.

THE PLAYLIST

1. LORDE — “PERFECT PLACES”

If you haven’t listened to “Melodrama” all the way through, you’re missing the best song off Lorde’s second album. Tucked in the last spot on the album is “Perfect Places,” an anthem about searching for something better. It’s the perfect song to keep on a long run playlist, but move it all the way to the beginning.

2. CARDI B — “BODAK YELLOW”

No one had a better 2017 than Cardi B. Her rise from humble beginnings to rap superstar is an incredible story, culminating in this song stealing the number 1 spot from Taylor Swift. Despite being ubiquitous, “Bodak Yellow” still sounds new and offers a great adrenaline boost when your energy is lagging.

3. KENDRICK LAMAR — “DNA.”

It’s tough to pick the best song from “Damn.” But “DNA’s” raw lyrics over a simple but seething beat may be one of Lamar’s best songs ever. Have this one ready to go during a tough workout.

4. ED SHEERAN — “SHAPE OF YOU”

Yup, this song was everywhere in 2017. And if you’re not sick of it yet, it is likely going to be on heavy rotation in 2018 as well. The dancehall beat helps runners pick up the pace, even on the toughest runs.

5. TAYLOR SWIFT — “GETAWAY CAR”

No other artist elicited such strong reactions in 2017, both positive and negative. Despite many of her songs having a new sound, “Getaway Car” is classic Swift — soaring and nostalgic. Keep this on your playlist for when you want to be transported away for a few minutes.

6. DRAKE — “PASSIONFRUIT”

The most uptempo song from Drake’s 22-track “More Life” somehow still feels new, even months later. Maybe it’s the tropical dancehall beat. Maybe it’s Drake’s lyrics about a long distance relationship that’s falling apart. Or maybe it’s that we still can’t help but sway while we work out.

7. DJ KHALED, FEATURING RIHANNA AND BRYSON TILLER  — “WILD THOUGHTS”

Since this track dropped earlier this year, it’s almost guaranteed that we all have sung “wild, wild, wild” out loud during a run. This fun song over a Carlos Santana sample gave us a Rihanna fix and proved DJ Khaled still has some tricks left up his sleeve. Keep this ready for relaxed recovery and cooldown runs.

8. CALVIN HARRIS FEATURING FRANK OCEAN AND MIGOS  — “SLIDE”

Calvin Harris’s entire album sounds like a perfect summer day, which can be welcome distraction during those cold early 2018 runs. Of all the songs, “Slide” stands out as fun, catchy and a great way to transport you to warmer times.

9. CARLY RAE JEPSEN — “CUT TO THE FEELING”

Like most Carly Rae tracks, this song just sounds happy. This fun, bouncy pop tune is completely timeless, so it feels right at home in 2018. Queue it up for any type of run, from easy miles to speedy intervals.
